5 Netflix Movies & TV Shows To Watch During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

[ad_1]

Every year in the United States, about 245,000 women and 2,200 men are diagnosed with breast cancer. For women, it’s the most common type of cancer. Every year since 1985, breast cancer charities have recognized October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to discuss the realities of the disease and raise funds for research into causes, prevention, treatments, and a cure. Whether you or a loved one has been diagnosed with breast cancer or you simply want to educate yourself, it’s understandable if you’re turning to Netflix.

While Netflix doesn’t have a designated Breast Cancer Awareness category in the same way they have a designed Halloween category, there are a handful of documentaries and TV shows that deal with breast cancer available to watch on the platform. Here are some of our favorites.

Tig (2015)

In one year, Tig Notaro underwent treatment for breast cancer, grieves the recent loss of her mother, attempts to have a child with her fiancée Stephanie Allynne, and sees her standup career skyrocket following a set about her diagnosis. This documentary, directed by Kristina Goolsby and Ashley York, tells the story of that year.

Cristina (2016)

In this documentary short, director Michèle Ohayon tells the true story of her friend’s final days. Cristina was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, which had metastasized into her liver, at age 37.

The C Word (2016)

Cancer survivor Meghan L. O’Hara produced and directed this documentary about preventative breast cancer research, narrated by Morgan Freeman. O’Hara shares her own story, and speaks with other survivors as well as experts.

Dead To Me, Season 1, Episode 4, “I Can’t Go Back” (2019)

In this dark comedy series, Christina Applegate’s character, Jen, is a BRCA gene carrier who had a double mastectomy — a which is revealed in episode four. The detail was partially inspired by Applegate’s own experience: she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 and had a double mastectomy.

Jane the Virgin Season 4, Episode 14, “Chapter Seventy-Eight” (2018)

While telenovela-inspired Jane the Virgin has many, many plotlines, seasons four and five feature a subplot in which Jane’s mother, Xiomara, is diagnosed with breast cancer, gets a single mastectomy, and recovers with the support of her husband, international telenovela star Rogelio De La Vega.
